Getting started
What does GuardCompass cover?
We compare antivirus suites, VPNs, and identity protection side by side. We focus on the features that matter (protection, privacy, trials, refunds, renewals) without hype.
How do you make money?
Some links are affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t change our verdicts. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
Do you test every product?
We combine hands-on spot checks with primary sources (official docs, plans, in-app settings) and independent signals where relevant. See our Methodology.
Antivirus
Do I still need antivirus with Windows 11?
Usually yes. Built-in protection has improved, but full suites add stronger phishing/ransomware defenses, safer banking, parental controls, and simpler multi-device management.
Will antivirus slow down my computer?
Modern suites are lighter than before. Impact varies by vendor and settings. Our table shows features and trade-offs; choose a lighter suite if your PC is older.
Do I need antivirus on a Mac?
We recommend it for most users. macOS benefits from additional web/phishing protection and extras. See the Mac-focused options in the comparison.
VPN
Is a VPN legal? Will it slow my internet?
VPNs are legal in most countries. Expect a small speed hit; modern protocols (WireGuard/Lightway) keep performance high for streaming and travel.
Do I need a VPN at home?
It depends. A VPN adds privacy on public Wi-Fi, helps avoid ISP snooping, and can reduce some tracking. It’s not a cure-all and won’t make you anonymous.
What is a “no-logs” policy and are audits important?
No-logs means the provider claims not to record your activity. Independent audits increase trust. Our VPN table flags audited no-logs where available.
Identity protection
What does identity protection actually do?
It monitors for breaches/leaks of your personal data (email, IDs, bank alerts), sends warnings, and may include recovery help and theft insurance on some plans.
Do I need 3-bureau credit monitoring?
Useful in the US for credit fraud detection, often on higher tiers. Outside the US, services focus more on breach/identity alerts. See the Identity comparison.
Pricing, trials, and renewals
Why is the first year cheaper than renewal?
Most vendors offer promo pricing for the first term; renewal is higher. We call this out and link to the vendor so you can confirm current terms.
Do these products have free trials or refunds?
Yes—varies by brand and plan. See the “Free trial” and “Refund policy” rows in each table. Always confirm the final terms on the vendor’s site.
Can I use one subscription on multiple devices?
Usually yes. Plans list device limits (e.g., 5 or 10). Check the plan details in our tables and on the vendor’s page.
Privacy & data
How do you handle my data?
We keep things minimal and use consent for analytics/marketing cookies. See our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy. You can change preferences via “Manage cookies” in the footer.
Are your links tracked?
Affiliate links use IDs so a network can attribute a sale to us. We mark links as rel="sponsored nofollow" and respect user consent for non-essential cookies.
Technical & troubleshooting
My antivirus/VPN isn’t working—can you fix it?
We’re not the vendor’s support team. For billing or technical issues, contact the provider directly. For general questions, message us and we’ll try to help.
Why do features differ by country or device?
Licensing, app store rules, and local laws can change what’s offered. We note these differences where possible; always verify on the vendor’s site.
